Overview

Assin Kushea, located in the central region of Ghana, was a major domestic trade route for the transatlantic slave trade.
This town was situated along the slave trade route that connected the North and South of Ghana.
Slaves were captured from the North and transported through the forest to the Assin Manso slave river, where they were washed and traded. Many of the captured slaves were forced to walk long distances in chains and were subjected to brutal treatment from their captors. The journey was arduous and many of the slaves died from exhaustion, disease, and hunger.
The trauma and pain of the slave trade are still felt by the people of Assin Kushea today.

Commemoration of the fallen slaves
The Chiefs and people of Assin Kushea have not forgotten the horrors of the slave trade.
In remembrance of the ones who never made it, they built the Tomb of the Unknown Slave.
This tomb is a place of reflection and mourning for the fallen slaves who lost their lives during the journey. The tomb serves as a reminder of the inhumanity and cruelty of the slave trade and the importance of never forgetting this dark period in history.
This site receives hundreds of visitors each year who come to pay their respect after visiting the Assin Manso Ancestral Slave river park.
